What Are They?

Some people chose to walk life with their eyes wide-shut. I prefer to chose the “strange”. If it doesn’t harm or kill you, why not embrace the extraordinary? These shots were taken during a very turbulent windstorm that was hiking on up the St. Lawrence River, one evening in the late summer of 2011. The area has a lot of igneous rock, and I live in the 1000 Island area very close to the river. It’s about seven miles wide, where we are.

Sometimes the river has just enough warmth to its water that it staves off the harsher climate; but that same body of water also attracts like-minded elements. So, sometimes thunderstorms, lightening, wind clouds, storm clouds, snow, sleet, and water spouts are a little bit more brawny in character too.

The teal blue in the sky at dusk was there. That colour is one of my favourites, and it was most likely the reason I picked up the camera and headed outside. The clouds were moving fast, and the wind had a touch of umph to it as well. The shots were taken intuitively, and I had no idea that these particles were there – at least to the negative eye.

The fascinating thing is determining what these particles are – water or dust particles? Not likely, otherwise the same spot would be in the same place on the lense as the previous shot. These are taken within a 10 minute span; I would even argue 5 to 7 minutes.

There also appears to be a 3 dimensional quality in the picture, as some are changing shape and intensity of presence, as well as appearance and distance to the lense. The lights seem to be riding the storm – surfing. When the storm had gone over, so had they. I have taken shots in other storms since then, and the lights are not there. I haven’t cleaned the lense, so the same particles should be interrupting every photo taken with that lense – you would think! It’s a mystery.

When I google spirit orbs, these shapes fit in. I would be interested in seeing photos from other places in the world, where these unusual particles show up in film too.
